So I went into the Sense8 tag to find artwork/gifs to reblog, realizing that I would likely find hundreds of people expressing their sadness and frustration over the cancelation of the show.
What I didn’t expect was the emotions I felt as I watched videos, read rants, and looked at screen shots of tweets from fans. I was on the verge of tears.
Yeah, I’ve cried over TV shows (Fringe being one of those) and video games (don’t even get me started on Mass Effect) on numerous occasions… But this show was just different.
It was different because it was relatable, and not just to me, but to all of the fans. It’s so rare to see bisexuality represented in any fictional production, for example, and it was nice to feel inclusion rather than erasure. And obviously, there was a lot more to it than that. The show included various gender identities, sexualities, cultural backgrounds, social status, economic status… and I could go on.
I feel like every single viewer could relate to this show and it’s characters in more than one way. That’s such a rarity these days, and for Netflix to CANCEL the show citing bullshit reasons (which I have investigated, just like most fans) is just unacceptable to me.
They’re taking something away from so many people: representation.
It’s insulting, really. Even though I’m not personally part of many groups of people that are misrepresented or not represented at all, I still feel your pain. Yeah, there are other shows, other games, other movies. But when I compare Sense8 to the others, it had something that they don’t have, and that’s realistic, relatable representation.
If I could say anything to Netflix (and I plan to) it would be this:
You have taken away something great from your subscribers. You gave them characters, stories, and situations that were extremely relevant, realistic, and relatable. To ignore all of that because of “lack of viewers” or “lack of funds” is pathetic. If you stopped lying and started listening, you would realize the real reason all of us are saddened by the sudden and inappropriate conclusion of Sense8. No one can make you bring the show back, but rest assured we will never forget Sense8, what it meant to us, and what losing it has done to us.
And to cancel it at the beginning of Pride Month? If I have to explain why that was a stupid decision, we have bigger problems on our hands.
